LONDON FASHION WEEK – Reviews: Burberry Prorsum’s Biker Babes

The legendary British design house, Burberry Prorsum, showcased it’s musings on our spring summer wardrobes to a packed house (or rather tent) in west London. Burberry is an important show, not just for London Fashion week for which it is the pinnacle show but throughout the fashion globe.

It’s influence is none so more evident than with this season’s must-have item, an aviator jacket. Yes they were sporadically available in other collections (Pringle and Acne to name a few) but it was Bailey that made them the focal point of his show and thus ten of thousands of fashion lovers make this translation to their winter wardrobe.

Christopher Bailey’s collection for spring/summer 2011 was aptly entitled; Burberry Biker. Burberry has enjoyed creating juxtapositions within their collections, delicate ruched lace dresses vs sharply tailored military coats but for spring this division has been taken to its extreme.

An array of fierce biker babes took the catwalk in quilted leather jackets and leggings, whilst feminine dresses in fruit pastel palettes were adorned with black leather strapping detailing. There were spike and stud adornments, a smattering of snake-skin and killer shoe-boots (just ask the model that took a tumble).

Where Bailey’s collection really cottoned onto something new was with his accessories. The leather biker jackets we have seen before in as many different forms as well as the pretty ruched skirts and dresses. The accessories took on a life of their own in a welcome departure from the classic Burberry look; it’s the bright green leather waist belts – double wrapped (of course) and an orange clutch that I’ll really be coveting next spring.

The Burberry Prorsum show is THE hot ticket at London Fashion Week, so today as Christopher Bailey unveiled his collection for spring/summer 2011 the A-list flocked to the capital. The front row last season was made up of Kristen Stewart, Kate Hudson and Mary Kate Olsen so expectations were naturally high.

Sarah Jessica Parker was the big name to make her way into the Burberry tent. SJP who has been in town for Alexander McQueen’s memorial looked stylish in a Burberry Prorsum lacey dress teamed with leather jacket and McQueen’s Novak bag.

Tennis star Serena Williams is often spotted wearing Burberry so her arrival at the show was no surprise; Serena wore a green satin dress and black aviator jacket. Alexa Chung chose a chic green military inspired outfit and Cat Deeley looked fab in fall’s Burberry must-have, a belted military coat.

AWARDS SEASON – Best and Worst Dressed at the 2010 Emmy Awards

Monday, 30 August, 2010

It was a successful night for the attendees of the 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards. Unlike many a red carpet occasion, fashion disasters were few and far between.

That doesn’t mean the Emmy’s didn’t leave their mark, a definite shift in the fashion thinking could be observed; where this year the mood has been all about the romance (floaty, feminine and frilled), for the Emmy’s…. it’s all gone a little bit dark.

Our best dressed star of the night demonstrates this new aesthetic perfectly. Glee’s Lea Michele brought the drama in a midnight blue fishtail Oscar De La Renta gown. Whilst her castmate Jayma Mays wowed in a deep blue strapless Burberry Prorsum gown. Honourable mention goes to Mad Men’s January Jones who looked sensational in an azule blue voluminous Atelier Versace gown.

Onto the fashion fails. The Hill’s ladies did not fair well. Lo Bosworth looked double her age and weight(not to mention under-dressed) in a green Karen Caldwell shift dress. Stephanie Pratt either didn’t read the invite properly or the Emmy’s was just the first stop on her way to a nightclub because she chose a sixties style Naven mini dress. Finally Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara chose an embellished Carolina Herrera gown in the worst shade of yellow imaginable.

AWARDS SEASON – Who Wore What at the 2010 Emmy Awards

Last night the stars descended on Los Angeles for yet another lavish award ceremony. The 2010 Primetime Emmy Awards celebrates all that is fab in American tv. As expected the big winner of the night was Mad Men, the drama series about the advertising industry in the 1960s took away the coveted outstanding series award. Glee also did well with Jane Lynch awarded outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series.

The fashion was hotly anticipated, the summer months between the big four (Golden Globes, SAGs, Oscars and BAFTAs) and the Emmys are long and relatively quiet on the fashion front. But the drought ended last night with an array of showstopping gowns hitting the red carpet.

Here is the roundup of who wore what at the 2010 Primetime Emmys:

TRENDY TALK – Fall 2010: Shearling Jackets

Monday, 23 August, 2010
LONDON, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 23: A model walks the catwalk during the Burberry Prorsum LFW Autumn/Winter 2010 Women s wear show at the Parade Ground, Chelsea College of Art on February 23, 2010 in London, England. (Photo by Ian Gavan/Getty Images for Burberry)

A shearling aviator jacket is THE must have coat to be seen in this fall. Burberry Prorsum caused a stir at London Fashion week when Christopher Bailey sent his models down the runway in these sheepskin delights. But it wasn’t just Burberry who chose to feature these jackets, also spotted at Pringle, Hermes and Emilio Pucci.

Ok so it may be a little early to think of purchasing your winter coat but in fashion you’ve got to be fast to be fabulous! Here are some of our favourites, the Burberry versions will set you back the better part of £2,000 but there are other options.

Acne’s grey leather vintage jacket £1,080 from my-wardrobe.com is a stunning option. For a mid-price option try this limited edition chocolate shearling jacket from Mint Velvet for just £175 (we will be!) due in end of August. Looking for a bargain? You can’t go wrong with Next’s faux sheepskin aviator £75.

TRENDY TALK – Autumn/Winters Hottest Trends

Monday, 21 June, 2010
LONDON, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 23: A model walks the catwalk during the Burberry Prorsum LFW Autumn/Winter 2010 Women s wear show at the Parade Ground, Chelsea College of Art on February 23, 2010 in London, England. (Photo by Ian Gavan/Getty Images for Burberry)

So with the sales happening right now the spring/summer collections are checking out of the shops at bargain prices, but in their place comes (perhaps prematurely) the autumn/winter collections. Not ready to make those all important winter wardrobe decisions. (Which coat? What boots? Skirt length? Trouser style?) Don’t despair!

The shows earlier in the year brought about an array of looks, palettes and themes, enough to confuse even the savviest fashionista. Here we dissect the collections to bring you the hottest trends for the fall.

HOT LOOKS:

Military goes Aviator: Military has been around for a while but this season it has evolved into a Top Gun-esque Aviator theme thanks to Burberry Prorsum (above) backed up by shearling appearances at Pringle, Hermes and Emilio Pucci.

NEW YORK - FEBRUARY 18: A model walks the runway at the Ralph Lauren Collection Fall 2010 Fashion Show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at 275 Hudson Street on February 18, 2010 in New York, New York. (Photo by Fernanda Calfat/Getty Images for IMG)

Equestrian Chic: Get out your tweed jackets and riding boots because this is a hot look a big theme at Ralph Lauren also seen at Christian Dior and Mulberry.

Animal Print: Leopard is now a wardrobe staple but it wasn’t just spots on the runway tiger and lizard were also prevalent, check out Balmain, Dries Van Noten, Dolce and Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli and Blumarine for some of the best.

LONDON, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 22: A model walks down the catwalk during the Christopher Kane Fashion Show at the Top Shop show space as part of London Fashion Week on February 22, 2010 in London, England. (Photo by Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images)

Lacey lovely: Last season we were pastel pretty next season we’ll be saucy seductresses, think Parisian lingerie. Christopher Kane got everyone feeling lusty, whilst Dolce and Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Antonio Berardi and Valentino also had some racy looks.

COLOURS:

Red: Red is hot hot hot for fall. We’ve already seen it on our favourite A-listers now prepare yourself to go bold in coats/dresses/skirts thanks to Givenchy, Zac Posen, Joseph Altuzarra, Giorgio Armani and some particularly stunning gowns at Valentino.

NEW YORK - FEBRUARY 17: A model walks the runway at the Michael Kors Fall 2010 Fashion Show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at The Tent at Bryant Park on February 17, 2010 in New York, New York. (Photo by Frazer Harrison/Getty Images for IMG)

Metallics: Prepare for a gold rush, from delicate bronzes to bright and shiny the look for evening is all about the metallic. Michael Kors had some show stopping gowns whilst Lanvin and DVF also featured metallic.

Camel: There’s a revolution in daytime chic that will hark back to eras gone by where camel was the prevalent palette. Camel coats are big but it doesn’t stop there check out Celine, Chloe, Marc Jacobs and Gucci for inspiration.

WARDROBE ESSENTIALS:

MILAN, ITALY - FEBRUARY 27: A model walks the runway during the Emilio Pucci Milan Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2010 show on February 27, 2010 in Milan, Italy. (Photo by Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images)

High waisted trousers: Give your wardrobe a seventies overhall with the must have trousers. Particularly sexy looks were seen over at Emilio Pucci with a fair presence also at Tommy Hilfiger, Chloe and Salvatore Ferragamo.

Mid length skirts: Perhaps one of the biggest shocks at the fall collections, the hemlines are coming down so they hang mid-calf in a look that is distinctly 50s. Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Fendi all gave us this new look.

A model displays a creation for Celine Fall-Winter 2010/2011 ready-to-wear collection show in Paris, France on March 7, 2010. Photo by Thierry Orban/ABACAPRESS.COM

Leather anything: Check out any collection and you can probably find something leather, we’re moving on from jackets to dresses, skirts, trousers and tops. Particular favourites include Celine, Derek Lam, Gianfranco Ferre, Christoper Kane and Rick Owens.

PARIS - MARCH 09: Model walks the runway during the Chanel Ready to Wear show as part of the Paris Womenswear Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 at Grand Palais on March 9, 2010 in Paris, France. (Photo by Francois Durand/Getty Images)

Fur Coat : Real or fake whatever your pick just make sure your wearing it. Whether it’s a cuddly coat, fluffy gillet or even yeti boots just make it furry. Chanel went for it big time but the look was also prevalent at many other collections including Maison Martin Magiela, Proenza Schouler, Lanvin, Chloe and Valentino.

STEAL HER STYLE – Gemma Arterton Does Utility Chic

Thursday, 22 April, 2010

Gemma Arterton, British actress most famous for starring alongside Daniel Craig in James Bond attended the premiere of her new film ‘The Disappearance of Alice Creed’ at a very non-James Bondesque location……Southampton University. Her outfit however was worthy of Bond girl status.

Gemma is known for her showstopping red carpet dresses rather than her on trend looks but the outfit she sported could not get more stylish. In harem pants, a sheer blouse, oversized blazer and strappy sandals, Gemma shows how to work the utility trend, fashionistas all round should take note.

DKNY - Runway - Spring 2010 MBFWThakoon - Runway - Spring 2010 MBFWMercedes-Benz Presents Fashion Week Spring 2010 Best of Runway Day 8

Utility chic was seen all over the runways for spring/summer look to the catwalks of DKNY, Thakoon and Tommy Hilfiger for inspiration. For some it invoked fear, however is one supposed to look glam in baggy trousers? For others it was a delight, finally fashion can be comfortable.

The key to this trend really has two elements, firstly the baggy nature of the trousers can overtake the look thus you need to compensate by dressing your top half in something tight and sexy. Secondly you  MUST wear heels with this look, wear flats are you’ll look ready to go backpacking around Asia….not a good look.

Here are two outfit options to recreate Gemma’s stylish look and see you safely through this trend:

First, for those who wish to splash the cash. Team these Vivienne Westwood harem pants £315, with this sheer lace bodysuit from By Malene Birger £67, throw over this Acne blazer £325 and finish the look with this Burberry Prorsum boots £495. All available from net-a-porter.com.

For those who are looking to try this trend out on a budget head to Topshop. Zip detail harem trousers £38 with this cute rose appliqué body £25, this ¾ ruch sleeved blazer £60 and these fab Antoinette ankle strap boots £90. All available from Topshop.com.

TRENDY TALK – Draping a la Burberry

Monday, 12 April, 2010

London Fashion Week - Burberry After Party Claire Danes attends BAFTA in London Burberry & Vanity Fair Portraits: VIP Private View - Arrivals

Draping/ruching/gathering, whatever you want to call it, it is hard to argue this particular fabric technique isn’t rather fabulous. Draping was a heavyweight in appearances on the catwalks and is recurring on the red carpets.

Where is it most prevalent? You don’t need to know much about fashion to recall the B word….Burberry of course! Christopher Bailey one of the reigning gods over here at Lady Glamourazzi stirred up a storm last September when he sent his models down the catwalk in a variety of ruched designs.

Burberry Runway: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion WeekBurberry Runway: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion Week

The technique is beyond flattering, it is able to hide a multitude of sins and at the same time will wrap you into a garment that looks like it has been made to fit your skin! For the real on trend look wear in nude palettes; creams, pearls, oyster white and pair with fierce black platform sandals for good measure.

So who has been sporting Burberry’s ruched looks….a variety of Burberry girls from Frieda Pinto, Claire Danes at the BAFTAs and Emma Watson (of course!).

Get the look:

Burberry Prorsum Arrivals - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

If you feel like splashing the cash (and why not, remember the beauty of Burberry is that they are investment pieces) go for the ruched skirt. As seen on Kristen Stewart, available at Net-a-porter.com for £995.

Alternatively budget options include this black skirt from Topshop £35 or how about a look-a-like cream dress from Goddiva.co.uk £35.

STYLE ICON – Nikki Reed

Monday, 1 March, 2010

Nikki Reed of the Twilight Saga fame is quite often overlooked in the style stakes with the likes of Kristen Stewart, Anna Kendrick and Ashley Greene in the limelight. However a closer look at Nikki’s style choices demonstrates that she can more than hold her own against her cast-mates.

Nikki, like the majority of her famous co-stars (Kristen, Elizabeth, Ashley, Rachelle etc) dress down in the day, perhaps this is in reaction to the need to hide from the masses of adoring fans or maybe just a personal choice. Whatever the explanation it means that when the red carpet beckons for Nikki and the designer dresses come out the effect is a real head-turner!

Here is a roundup of her most stylish choices:

At the New Moon premiere she went high fashion wearing a pastel blue dress by Burberry Prorsum accessorising it with a belt.

To the GQ awards Nikki showed her chic side with a navy blue strapless dress by Maggy London. At the Hamiliton awards it was a fabulous gold dress by Nanette Lepore teamed with a boyfriend blazer.

And for the very first Twilight LA Premiere she stunned in a black and white Marchesa number.
