TRENDY TALK – Kitten Heels….the new Cool

Monday, 3 May, 2010

"The Golden Compass" Press ConferenceUK Film Premiere: Valkyrie - ArrivalsState Dinner at Elysee Palace - Paris

Kitten heels are usually the footwear of choice for two types of women; those who really don’t like/can’t walk in high heels and those whose husbands are shall we say vertically challenged (See Nicole Kidman, Katie Holmes and Carla Bruni above).

Louis Vuitton - Paris Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010

However during the shows for the spring/summer collections something very strange happened, after showing season after season of towering heels, the designers decided to give us all a little break. Thus fashion heavyweights including Louis Vuitton (shown above) Marc Jacobs and Prada sent their models down the runway in heels barely measuring an inch. The entire front row and fashionistas across the world breathed a sigh of relief, kitten heels just became cool.

Lady Glamourazzi shows you the best for your budget:

Christian Louboutin’s Simple 70 Leather Pumps £375 net-a-porter.com. A kitten heel in this season’s nude palette and with that fabulous red sole, any more explanation needed?

A great alternative to the pricey pair above is these Jonah Plain Court Shoes £55 from Topshop.

Kitten heel sandals are a great alternative to flat sandals for the summer. These are Givenchy’s Chain Embellished Suede Sandals £745 at net-a-porter.com.

Marks and Spencer have a great budget version with these Autograph Leather Jewel Cage sandals £49.

STEAL HER STYLE – Gemma Arterton Does Utility Chic

Thursday, 22 April, 2010

Gemma Arterton, British actress most famous for starring alongside Daniel Craig in James Bond attended the premiere of her new film ‘The Disappearance of Alice Creed’ at a very non-James Bondesque location……Southampton University. Her outfit however was worthy of Bond girl status.

Gemma is known for her showstopping red carpet dresses rather than her on trend looks but the outfit she sported could not get more stylish. In harem pants, a sheer blouse, oversized blazer and strappy sandals, Gemma shows how to work the utility trend, fashionistas all round should take note.

DKNY - Runway - Spring 2010 MBFWThakoon - Runway - Spring 2010 MBFWMercedes-Benz Presents Fashion Week Spring 2010 Best of Runway Day 8

Utility chic was seen all over the runways for spring/summer look to the catwalks of DKNY, Thakoon and Tommy Hilfiger for inspiration. For some it invoked fear, however is one supposed to look glam in baggy trousers? For others it was a delight, finally fashion can be comfortable.

The key to this trend really has two elements, firstly the baggy nature of the trousers can overtake the look thus you need to compensate by dressing your top half in something tight and sexy. Secondly you  MUST wear heels with this look, wear flats are you’ll look ready to go backpacking around Asia….not a good look.

Here are two outfit options to recreate Gemma’s stylish look and see you safely through this trend:

First, for those who wish to splash the cash. Team these Vivienne Westwood harem pants £315, with this sheer lace bodysuit from By Malene Birger £67, throw over this Acne blazer £325 and finish the look with this Burberry Prorsum boots £495. All available from net-a-porter.com.

For those who are looking to try this trend out on a budget head to Topshop. Zip detail harem trousers £38 with this cute rose appliqué body £25, this ¾ ruch sleeved blazer £60 and these fab Antoinette ankle strap boots £90. All available from Topshop.com.

TRENDY TALK – Draping a la Burberry

Monday, 12 April, 2010

London Fashion Week - Burberry After Party Claire Danes attends BAFTA in London Burberry & Vanity Fair Portraits: VIP Private View - Arrivals

Draping/ruching/gathering, whatever you want to call it, it is hard to argue this particular fabric technique isn’t rather fabulous. Draping was a heavyweight in appearances on the catwalks and is recurring on the red carpets.

Where is it most prevalent? You don’t need to know much about fashion to recall the B word….Burberry of course! Christopher Bailey one of the reigning gods over here at Lady Glamourazzi stirred up a storm last September when he sent his models down the catwalk in a variety of ruched designs.

Burberry Runway: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion WeekBurberry Runway: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion Week

The technique is beyond flattering, it is able to hide a multitude of sins and at the same time will wrap you into a garment that looks like it has been made to fit your skin! For the real on trend look wear in nude palettes; creams, pearls, oyster white and pair with fierce black platform sandals for good measure.

So who has been sporting Burberry’s ruched looks….a variety of Burberry girls from Frieda Pinto, Claire Danes at the BAFTAs and Emma Watson (of course!).

Get the look:

Burberry Prorsum Arrivals - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

If you feel like splashing the cash (and why not, remember the beauty of Burberry is that they are investment pieces) go for the ruched skirt. As seen on Kristen Stewart, available at Net-a-porter.com for £995.

Alternatively budget options include this black skirt from Topshop £35 or how about a look-a-like cream dress from Goddiva.co.uk £35.

TRENDY TALK: Get into Shorts

Monday, 5 April, 2010

Paris Fashion - Stella McCartney.Marc By Marc Jacobs - Runway - Spring 2010 MBFWPringle of Scotland Runway: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion Week

It’s getting to that time of year again where the temperature creeps up along with hemlines. As a great alternative to a skirt/dress this year is about trying out shorts. Shorts have been around for a while in many guises, most prominently seen in the denim hotpant look sported by Kate Moss and friends. However this year shorts have really come into their own and there is now a shorts look for every occasion.

Seen all over the catwalks for spring/summer 2010, it is harder to find a designer not showing shorts. As seen above Stella McCartney showed an elegant look with tailored evening shorts in luxe fabrics, whilst Marc by Marc Jacobs made shorts playful in an array of colours/styles/lengths and finally a classic look was shown at Pringle.

Look no further than our favourite fashion faces to demonstrate how to wear them. Olivia Palermo goes for a more edgy look in tweed shorts whilst Alexa Chung is sexy cool at Chanel.

TRENDY TALK – Digital Prints

Monday, 22 March, 2010

Thakoon - Runway - Spring 2010 MBFWMulberry - Presentation - Fall 2010 MBFWBCBG Max Azria - Runway - Spring 2010 MBFW

The runways/celebrities/high streets have gone psychedelic for digital print. All over the runways for the past two seasons print has had a pivotal presence. Seen above at Thakoon, Mulberry and BCBG Max Azria. Celebrities have been seen wearing digital print in the form of the iconic Alexander McQueen spring/summer designs as seen on Anna Paquin below. In addition British newcomer Peter Pilotto’s dresses with his signature prints have been making waves among the a-list as seen on Amanda Seyfried below.

Glamour Women of the Year Awards 2009 - Outside Arrivals16th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards - Arrivals

How to wear it? The best way to go about it without looking like a bargain bin reject is in little mini dresses, the shorter and tighter the better! No tights needed or lavish accessories, the thing about these prints is that so much is going on anything else looks too much. Keep it simple and let the dress make the statement.

If you have a bit of money to spend this bandeau printed dress from BCBG Max Azria is a great option, in the style of Max Azria’s legendary bandage dresses it is a great party dress. £213 from my-wardrobe.com

For a less pricey option try this print puff sleeve dress £40 from Next. More versatile than the BCBG Max Azria look simply add tights and flats for daytime chic.

TRENDY TALK – Military Muse

Saturday, 13 March, 2010

Paris Spring-Summer 2009 Ready To Wear Fashion Week - Balmain RunwayBurberry Prorsum Runway - LFW Autumn/Winter 2010

The trend for military inspired pieces does feel slightly old, it has after all been around a good few seasons now (see above Balmain’s rock military from last spring). However when Christopher Bailey showed his autumn/winter collection for Burberry of aviator flight jackets with tailored jackets with military detailing (above right) it became clear that this trend is not going anywhere.

It’s a look that can be played out in many different directions. A military jacket over a white shirt and black skinnies with a killer pair of heels ….think Victoria Beckham. Or a utility inspired jacket with a bum skimming mini skirt and heavy duty biker boots for a Taylor Momsen/Agyness Deyn look.

Whichever way you take it there is no doubting that it is a very easy look to achieve. The addition of a few well place gold buttons can transform any jacket/cardigan into military chic.

Lady Glamourazzi has found some great options, look no further than online retailer Missguided.co.uk:

The Shaffi jacket is a great buy, you can wear right now and bring it out again come Autumn for an equally on-trend look. What is done so often by both designers and the high street is recreate these trends in the most basic way ie. sew a few buttons here and there, the chain detailing on this jacket makes it a little bit original and for £44.99 it’s a steal!

The Magdeline sweater dress £21.99 is a great option for those who would like to push their look a little further than just a jacket. It’s a versatile piece that will work in the day but add a pair of heels and you’re good to go at night!

TRENDY TALK – Leopard Loving

Wednesday, 10 March, 2010

Jennifer Lopez Gets Her Nails Done!Valentine's Day actress Emma Roberts arrives back at her London hotel wearing thick open toe leopard platform heels!Kate Moss wears her beloved leopard print fur coat to the swanky Ivy Club in London

What do these celebrities (Jennifer Lopez, Emma Roberts and Kate Moss) have in common? Ok other than fame, wealth and whole raft of designer clothing at their disposal…..they are all sporting a spot of leopard print.

Leopard print has been around for some seasons now, some look upon it with excitement eager to release their inner feline, others only see Eastender’s Cat Slater. If you are of the latter mindset perhaps its time to broaden your horizons because leopard isn’t going anywhere!

Designer Alexander Wang featured leopard accessories in his spring/summer collection and Mulberry’s entire autumn/winter show was based on it. Leopard is clearly going to big for atleast the next two seasons.

How to wear it? Unless your name is Kate Moss keep it to a minimal, accessories only. Bags, shoes and scarves will all work well (either one item per outfit or two at most). Anything more substantial is going to be a whole lot more risqué. And never be tempted to wear a leopard dress…..ever!

Lady Glamourazzi has picked out two great options from my-wardrobe.com. Summer is on the way and what better way to celebrate then with these fab Sam Edelman Leopard Sandals £102 at  my-wardrobe.com. Alternatively this versatile shoulder bag is perfect for the beach or is big enough for a weekend bag. Sonia by Sonia Rykiel bag £178 at my-wardrobe.com

TRENDY TALK – Ripped Jeans

Saturday, 6 March, 2010

Taylor Momsen is not everyone’s idea of a style icon but to give her credit she can carry a trend. Attending the BMI industry insider event last night in New York she wore a very Taylor-esque outfit consisting of a rock tshirt, biker boots and not forgetting the very on trend ripped jeans.

Ripped Jeans are big this season, inspired by the genius collections Christopher Decarnin has been creating for Balmain. The uber-cool dishevelled rock chic vibe mixed in with a big dose of sexy glamour has been hard to ignore.

Ripped jeans are everyone’s cup of tea but where there is a will (or should that be trend), there is a way!

For Taylor’s laid back look boyfriend cut jeans paired with simple t-shirt and biker boots will do the trick. See  Acne’s Her Crossed Slim Boyfriend Jeans £122 on sale at my-wardrobe.com.

For the more polished fashionista who would not dream of slumming it in biker boots, a pair of heels (kitten if you are a die-hard fashion follower) and a smart tailored shirt with a boyfriend blazer will smarten up the look. Try this bargain pair, celebrity favourite J Brand’s Low Rise Thrasher Jean £61 also at my-wardrobe.com.

TRENDY TALK – Leather Lust

Monday, 1 March, 2010

Miu Miu - Paris Fashion Week S/S 2010Carey Mulligan arrives for the An Education Premiere in New York

You would be hard pressed to have missed the trend for leather that has been knocking around the past few seasons. The leather look began with a rock vibe as sported by edgier stars such as Agyness Deyn and Lindsay Lohan but slowly evolved into a more enduring and encompassing trend.

Take a brief look at the catwalks and you will see that most designers include it and a fair few have even featured collections around it (see below Todd Lynn, Balmain and Alexander Wang). And naturally if there’s a trend on the runway there will be a celebrity wearing it. (Kate Moss and Carey Mulligan above, both in Prada).

Todd Lynn Catwalk: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion WeekBalmain Fashion Show - ParisAlexander Wang - Runway - Fall 2010 MBFW

Updating your look for the new season involves two main themes:

1. Jackets in soft draped leather or sharp shouldered.
Lady Glamourazzi has found a perfect example of each. For a draped leather number try this grey Limited Collection from Marks and Spencers for £149 (www.marksandspencers.com). Or for the more tailored sharp shouldered look try this black By Malene Birger jacket from www.my-wardrobe.com for £428.

2. Statement leather pieces (a pencil skirt, a shift dress etc.)
If you do go for a dress a la Kate and Carey there is a vital rule – the look should always be fitted but never skin tight. Try this grey leather biker skirt from www.mintvelvet.co.uk for £85.
