TRENDY TALK – Spring/Summer 2011: Billow

Last summer’s love affair with longer lengths won’t be going anywhere this season. The runways for spring/summer 2011 showed floaty floor-lengths in an abundance. No-one did it with more glamour than Alber Elbaz at Lanvin but covetable looks were seen at J.Mendel, Erdem and Gianfranco Ferre.

Wear these ground skimming gowns with flat sandals for effortless summer chic. For alternate evening look go for a gown featuring this season’s red carpet must-have feature; a sexy split. Floral prints/block colours/delicate nudes; you can’t go wrong.

Vionnet’s split-sleeve silk gown £1,650 will make an eye-catching look available at net-a-porter.com. A more demure choice is See by Chloe’s pretty chiffon maxi £360 also from net-a-porter.com. Finally French Connection’s draped Darcy dress for £97 will make a summer staple.

Without a doubt the biggest look for spring/summer 2011 involves colour; the bolder the better. After a winter of demure camels and wintery whites the new season colour palette is most welcome.

In New York we saw a seventies take on brash colours at DVF and Marc Jacobs, in London Burberry and Christopher Kane glowed with a splash of neon, in Milan it was all about Jil Sander’s colour-blocking and in Paris no-one did it better than the chicer than chic Nina Ricci.

This is the easiest look to wear this spring even if it takes a steely nerve to step out in an audacious yellow and purple ensemble. Keep it simple in a classic shift like this red number by Narciso Rodriguez £1,160 at Net-a-porter.com. Mix and match pieces with these blue shorts £35 at Topshop.com. Or go all out in this pleated colourblock trapeze dress £46 at Asos.com.

It’s sensual, sexy and inherently feminine; velvet was a reoccurring trend on the runways for fall/winter 2010. We saw it at Zac Posen in bright dresses, at Alexander Wang it took a sexier form and Burberry showed its versatility with military coats.

Who wants to wear skimpy silk when the temperatures dropping? Velvet is a heavier fabric that hides a multitude of bodily sins in addition to be extraordinarily flexible (layer up a dress for work or strip down for the evening).

Velvet dresses for every budget:

Feeling flush with cash? Antonio Berardi strapless dress £1,070 at Net-a-porter. Got the urge to spend abit? Valentine velvet dress £120 at French Connection. Strapped for cash? Velvet bandeau tunic £45 at Topshop.

A shearling aviator jacket is THE must have coat to be seen in this fall. Burberry Prorsum caused a stir at London Fashion week when Christopher Bailey sent his models down the runway in these sheepskin delights. But it wasn’t just Burberry who chose to feature these jackets, also spotted at Pringle, Hermes and Emilio Pucci.

Ok so it may be a little early to think of purchasing your winter coat but in fashion you’ve got to be fast to be fabulous! Here are some of our favourites, the Burberry versions will set you back the better part of £2,000 but there are other options.

Acne’s grey leather vintage jacket £1,080 from my-wardrobe.com is a stunning option. For a mid-price option try this limited edition chocolate shearling jacket from Mint Velvet for just £175 (we will be!) due in end of August. Looking for a bargain? You can’t go wrong with Next’s faux sheepskin aviator £75.

You can’t fail to notice the new trend in shoes that has been hitting our magazines/televisions/computer screens in recent weeks. Once a staple in every girls wardrobe (and very noughties) the pointy toed stiletto shoe is back! We have seen Rihanna, Kate Moss and Gemma Arterton amongst others sporting this fresh look.

Move over round toes and put those cutesy peeptoes to the back of the wardrobe because this is the only shoe to be seen in this fall. Yes they are uncomfortable but ask the nearest male and they will tell, these heels are seriously sexy.

Here are some fab options, whatever your budget:

Secret platform shoes £65 Topshop.co.uk.

Samantha patent shoe £8 Linzishoes.com.

TRENDY TALK – Everyone’s Wearing A Little Red Dress

Wednesday, 30 June, 2010
NEW YORK - FEBRUARY 15: A model walks the runway at the Zac Posen Fall 2010 Fashion Show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at the Altman Building on February 15, 2010 in New York City. (Photo by Stefan Gosatti/Getty Images for IMG)

Last week we gave you the low-down on all the trends you should be preparing your wardrobe for this fall, including the overwhelming prevalence of red on the runways. Since then we haven’t been able to help but notice the reoccurring look on red carpets and celebrities world wide…..a little red dress.

Last week we saw Cheryl Cole in a stunning number from Versus at the X-Factor auditions. Twilight star Nikki Reed chose a strapless number by Lela Rose for a TV appearance. Finally Cameron Diaz customised an Oscar De La Renta dress to show off her legs.

The red dress is a fabulous look but is not without its pitfalls, get it wrong and you can look more bargain bin then bombshell. So what are the rules? First the fabric choice is important, never wear anything shiny, red shiny fabric just screams cheap. Second keep the dress little, the longer the dress the more overwhelming the look but at the same time avoid an overshare, all the ladies above have kept it classy never too much leg or cleavage and definitely not both at the same time. Finally keep the accessories minimal in nude or black, let the dress stand out.

Here are our picks of the best red dresses around for every budget:

Luxe buy:

Herve Leger off the shoulder bandage dress £905 at net-a-porter.com.

Mid range:

Reiss Sassy dress £169 from Reiss.co.uk

Budget:

Topshop plain bubble sleeve dress £40 from Topshop.co.uk

There has been a certain trend on red carpets of late and it hasn’t been hard to miss. Yellow gowns have been popping up everywhere. Versace used yellow extensively for their spring collection and continue the trend into fall alongside Fendi, Balenciaga and Elizabeth and James.

Red carpet looks have been seen on Lea Michelle at the Tonys in Zac Posen and SJP in Valentino at the NYC SATC2 premiere. It’s not all sunshine and smiles however; the trend is worn with an edgy vibe by Kristen Stewart in a Jenni Kayne skirt for Eclipse promo duties in Sydney.

To wear this trend to its optimum play safe and just stick to one yellow item such as a skirt like Kristen’s and tone it down with a basic top. If you are going to go the whole hog, make it mini, steer clear of anything over the knee too much yellow can result in a banana effect, always keep it short and sexy.

Here are some hot picks for every budget:

For your luxe yellow buys head to retailer Net-a-porter.com. Rock this yellow silk chiffon skirt by Adam £201.79. If you want to try out a bright coloured dress RM by Roland Mouret fitted Osu dress would be a great option £534.

For budget options Topshop have a great pair of silk yellow button side shorts by Boutique for £18. Check out Missguided.co.uk for the Maritza one shouldered yellow dress with a very on trend ruffle detail for just £29.99.

So with the sales happening right now the spring/summer collections are checking out of the shops at bargain prices, but in their place comes (perhaps prematurely) the autumn/winter collections. Not ready to make those all important winter wardrobe decisions. (Which coat? What boots? Skirt length? Trouser style?) Don’t despair!

The shows earlier in the year brought about an array of looks, palettes and themes, enough to confuse even the savviest fashionista. Here we dissect the collections to bring you the hottest trends for the fall.

HOT LOOKS:

Military goes Aviator: Military has been around for a while but this season it has evolved into a Top Gun-esque Aviator theme thanks to Burberry Prorsum (above) backed up by shearling appearances at Pringle, Hermes and Emilio Pucci.

NEW YORK - FEBRUARY 18: A model walks the runway at the Ralph Lauren Collection Fall 2010 Fashion Show during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week at 275 Hudson Street on February 18, 2010 in New York, New York. (Photo by Fernanda Calfat/Getty Images for IMG)

Equestrian Chic: Get out your tweed jackets and riding boots because this is a hot look a big theme at Ralph Lauren also seen at Christian Dior and Mulberry.

Animal Print: Leopard is now a wardrobe staple but it wasn’t just spots on the runway tiger and lizard were also prevalent, check out Balmain, Dries Van Noten, Dolce and Gabbana, Roberto Cavalli and Blumarine for some of the best.

LONDON, ENGLAND - FEBRUARY 22: A model walks down the catwalk during the Christopher Kane Fashion Show at the Top Shop show space as part of London Fashion Week on February 22, 2010 in London, England. (Photo by Gareth Cattermole/Getty Images)

Lacey lovely: Last season we were pastel pretty next season we’ll be saucy seductresses, think Parisian lingerie. Christopher Kane got everyone feeling lusty, whilst Dolce and Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Antonio Berardi and Valentino also had some racy looks.

COLOURS:

Red: Red is hot hot hot for fall. We’ve already seen it on our favourite A-listers now prepare yourself to go bold in coats/dresses/skirts thanks to Givenchy, Zac Posen, Joseph Altuzarra, Giorgio Armani and some particularly stunning gowns at Valentino.

Metallics: Prepare for a gold rush, from delicate bronzes to bright and shiny the look for evening is all about the metallic. Michael Kors had some show stopping gowns whilst Lanvin and DVF also featured metallic.

Camel: There’s a revolution in daytime chic that will hark back to eras gone by where camel was the prevalent palette. Camel coats are big but it doesn’t stop there check out Celine, Chloe, Marc Jacobs and Gucci for inspiration.

WARDROBE ESSENTIALS:

Mid length skirts: Perhaps one of the biggest shocks at the fall collections, the hemlines are coming down so they hang mid-calf in a look that is distinctly 50s. Marc Jacobs, Louis Vuitton and Fendi all gave us this new look.

A model displays a creation for Celine Fall-Winter 2010/2011 ready-to-wear collection show in Paris, France on March 7, 2010. Photo by Thierry Orban/ABACAPRESS.COM

Leather anything: Check out any collection and you can probably find something leather, we’re moving on from jackets to dresses, skirts, trousers and tops. Particular favourites include Celine, Derek Lam, Gianfranco Ferre, Christoper Kane and Rick Owens.

Fur Coat : Real or fake whatever your pick just make sure your wearing it. Whether it’s a cuddly coat, fluffy gillet or even yeti boots just make it furry. Chanel went for it big time but the look was also prevalent at many other collections including Maison Martin Magiela, Proenza Schouler, Lanvin, Chloe and Valentino.

TRENDY TALK – Christopher Kane’s Gingham Glee

Wednesday, 26 May, 2010
Christopher Kane Runway: Spring/Summer 2010 - London Fashion Week

What comes to mind when you hear the word gingham? Barn dances, cliché tied up western shirts with cowboy boots? Certainly not anything fashion worthy. Enter Christopher Kane.

Christopher Kane is the super-cool and unbelievably talented young British fashion designer who has this season stolen our hearts. When Christopher Kane sent his models down the runway in girly, floaty, silk gingham print dresses we all sighed in wonder. Never before has gingham been such a fashionable word.

To get hold of one of Kane’s gingham beauties you need a lot of money and to prepare yourself to be the envy of all fashionistas. Net-a-porter have a fabulous selection, this is our favourite, coming in at a cool £1,630.

Of course when a designer comes up with a trend so universally praised the high street will follow, which means there is a fair few affordable gingham delights out there.

Gant have a fabulous fifties inspired gingham dress £179.

Just in at Oasis is this gingham frill skater dress for £40.

If you don’t feel like going the whole hog in a gingham dress try this skirt £35 from Topshop.

TRENDY TALK – Satchels are Sexy…..

Monday, 10 May, 2010

Photo by: KG-81/starmaxinc.com 2010 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED 1/21/10 Keira Knightley leaving thRachel Bilson grabs a coffee and pastry from Coffee Bean before visiting a friend, wearing skinny jeans and a beige cardigan

Handbags, is there a word that can elicit quite as much excitement from the fairer sex? I’m not sure there is (except maybe Robert Pattinson). This season the buzz in bags is all about satchels. Yes that is the bag that back in your school days meant social suicide but not now because satchels are actually very cool…would Keira Knightley and Rachel Bilson wear them otherwise?

Who do we have to blame for this new trend? Well who else but the luxury English handbag maker….Mulberry. When Mulberry decided to create a bag for their number one celebrity fan Alexa Chung it had to be a little bit retro, stay true to the quintessential Mulberry look and be very very cool. Thus we now have a very hot trend for satchels.

Mulberry - Presentation - Fall 2010 MBFW

The Alexa looks like it’s a bag with staying power, Mulberry’s autumn/winter showed the satchel in a dazzling array of prints and designs.

Here Lady Glamourazzi shows you where to go for your satchel fix, whatever your budget:

You feel like splurging, go for a Mulberry Alexa, this one is perfect for summer in yellow buffalo leather. £695 net-a-porter.com. Get it before it goes! You want something very nice but don’t feel like shelling out the better half of a grand. Try the Grosvenor from Radley £175. Haven’t got that kind of money but still want something nice. Our good friends at ASOS have a fabulous solution is this ASOS leather tuck satchel £65. Love this trend but looking for a bargain? Head to Boohoo for the Clara Satchel £12.
