STYLE DEBATE – Angelina Jolie’s Salt Style: Fab or Fail?

Thursday, 29 July, 2010
SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA - JULY 28: Actress Angelina Jolie attends the 'Salt' South Korea premiere at the Time Square on July 28, 2010 in Seoul, South Korea. The film will open on July 29 in South Korea. (Photo by Chung Sung-Jun/Getty Images)

Angelina Jolie has made another set of promotional appearances for the release of new movie Salt. First she appeared at a press conference at a hotel in Seoul to talk about her latest film role. She chose a black leather maxi dress for the occasion (picture below). Later she attended the film’s premiere in a black strapless dress by Versace.

Angelina’s high fashion tour of the globe has received mixed reaction. Whilst some hail the return of the movie-star with glam appearances in Versace dresses including a red couture gown and a black vintage design. Then there is the contingent that hoped Angelina would wow us all with a new look, instead she has stuck to her same old tried and tested style formula.

With her latest appearance in South Korea which saw another two black dresses both of which were rather bland we are inclined to agree with the disappointed camp. Angelina will attend a premiere in London later next month, let’s hope she’s saved something special!

STYLE DEBATE – Jumpsuits

Wednesday, 23 June, 2010

Jumpsuits are a seventies fashion institution looked upon with fear and trepidation by even the savviest of shoppers. The fashion world has seen a massive revival thanks to the likes of Stella McCartney, Chloe, Yves Saint Laurent and Halston.

A jumpsuit is a tricky piece to pull of and infinitely more difficult than short little playsuits which are easy to pretty up in florals and bright colours. Unlike playsuits however you don’t have to fear you may expose a bum cheek and as most of them come in luxe jersey fabrics you’ll feel like your in your pyjamas (but in a totally fashionable way of course).
The number one rule for jumpsuits is that they must be kept simple. Stick to dark colours, no patterns, always wear with heels and keep them loose round the crotch (camel toe is never a good look). A great day to evening piece, simply wear a blazer over the top for daytime and whip off for a sexy androgynous look at night. Lauren Conrad pulls of her blue 3.1 Phillip Lim jumpsuit with perfection, whilst Chloe Sevigny exudes cool in YSL.
Here are 3 great options to suit every budget:

If you are minted you may as well go for the original and very best because no-one does jumpsuits better then Stella McCartney. Try out this tailored silk number £1,095 from net-a-porter.com.

Splash out on this off the runway DKNY look, this sleeveless crepe jumpsuit is the perfect day to evening investment £257 at net-a-porter.com.

If you are on a budget fear not the high street never fails. Topshop have a lot of great options we particularly like this button up jumpsuit £35, the grey vest top detailing is great for easing you into the jumpsuit trend.

STYLE DEBATE – Cheryl Cole in Herve Leger

Friday, 4 June, 2010
AZ Party at the VIP Room in Paris

Hot on the heels of her pending divorce from footballer husband Ashley Cole, Cheryl Cole is making the most of her newly single status. Last night she attended the AZ party at the VIP Room in Paris.

Cheryl may have left the ranks of the WAGs but that doesn’t mean she has left their style behind. Cheryl chose a little white/silver dress from the spring collection of Herve Leger by Max Azria. We loved our bandage dresses….two years ago, Cheryl is moving onto bigger and better things and so should her style.

Saying that however she paired her look with a much more acceptable fashion choice; Nicholas Kirkwood heels. Sarah Jessica Parker and her relentless wearing of Nicholas Kirkwood heels have made them the must-have footwear of the moment.

STYLE DEBATE: Giles Deacon new Creative Director at Ungaro

Tuesday, 25 May, 2010

Paris Fashion - Emanuel UngaroParis Fashion - Emanuel Ungaro

It’s never dull in the world of fashion and today is no exception. Following the surprise appointment and perhaps not so surprising failure of Lindsay Lohan to impress in her role as Creative Director at Emmanuel Ungaro she has been replaced.

Speculation was rife after Giles Deacon was spotted at lunch with Ungaro’s management team and it has been confirmed today that he will now be the new Creative Director. British designer Giles Deacon will continue to design his own line alongside his duties at Ungaro.

It is hoped that Deacon will transform the luck of this ailing brand following an unsuccessful few seasons. Deacon will have his work cut out for him however as his first collection for Ungaro will be shown during Paris fashion week this October.

STYLE DEBATE – Lea Michelle in Erdem

Wednesday, 19 May, 2010

If you haven’t heard of Glee you must have been living under a rock for the last six months. Glee is the fabulous high school drama/musical that has taken the world by storm this past year and catapulted its leading lady Lea Michelle to international stardom.

Lea has been closely watched for her fashion choices following outings in looks by Romona Keveza, Herve L.Leroux and Catherine Malandrino (all pictured below). It was however her appearance last night at a Fox party that really caught our eye……

Lea Michelle chose a dress from British favourite Erdem. The designer is the winner of the Vogue Fashion Designer Fund and is fast becoming a celebrity favourite. Whilst we love the Erdem dress which is taken from his winter collection the prom-like hairstyle and the dark makeup Lea has chosen are a massive disaster!

STYLE DEBATE – Nikki Reed in Chris Benz

Friday, 14 May, 2010
The Jonas Brothers arrive at The 12th Annual Hollywood Awards in LA

Twilight star Nikki Reed attended last night’s ‘Young Hollywood’ party in a risqué outfit. The young actress is most famous for her role as Rosalie Hale alongside Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson in the hit series The Twilight Saga.

Nikki chose a flesh tone dress by newcomer Chris Benz. Chris Benz is an American designer whose credentials include an internship with Marc Jacobs and being awarded the CFDA emerging talent award in 2004. She paired the look with gold sandals from Nicholas Kirkwood.

The dress ticks all the right boxes trend wise, with the draping and nude palette but is it perhaps a little too flesh baring? Fashion’s number one rule states that one most only bare boobs or legs, never both simultaneously. Nikki’s plunging neckline and high hemline has undoubtedly broken this. Extending the hemline a few inches south would have saved this dress but a commendable fashion attempt nonetheless.

STYLE DEBATE – US Weekly’s Style Party

Friday, 23 April, 2010

The stars were out in force in Hollywood last night taking to the black carpet for US Weekly’s Hot Hollywood Style party. So a party celebrating style one would think our favourite stars would pull out all the stops…..unfortunately not.

Jennifer Lopez who was awarded US weekly’s style icon of the decade was the only guest who actually came through in the style stakes. Dressed in a shimmery gold dress by Georges Chakra couture from the spring 2010 collection the singer/actress stole the show.

Less successful on the fashion front was Twilight Saga actress Anna Kendrick who went for a blue patterned dress by Pucci teamed with Sergio Rossi heels. Unfortunately the lizard print does not make for an attractive dress and the shape does nothing for Anna, drowning her!

Singer Ciara made a very common fashion faux pas letting it all hang out in her yellow print dress from Versace’s spring 2010 collection teamed with Versace heels. Remember the rule Ciara, legs or cleavage, never both and never ever both to this extent.

British singer Kelly Osbourne chose a design by Jeremy Scott. A chic little black dress, or so we thought until we saw the back………

It wasn’t all a disaster, Nikki Reed (Rosalie Hale in the Twilight Saga) looked great in a pink and black dress by Jay Godfrey.

STYLE DEBATE – Coachella Cool

Sunday, 18 April, 2010
Pixie Geldof shows off her peaches in a pair of revealing shorts at the Coachella Music festival with supermodel pal Agynes Deyn

Thought Glastonbury was the only musical festival to be seen at with its hordes of super fashionable people and celebrities mingling over good music and Hunter wellies? There is a new contender in the form of the uber cool Coachella festival held in California.

With the likes of Jay Z and Muse headlining, the event has become the main attraction for celebrities worldwide this weekend. With Paris Hilton, Beyonce, Katy Perry, Kelly Osbourne, Agyness Deyn, Pixie Geldof, Dita Von Teese and Mischa Barton all spotted hanging out around the festival.

It hasn’t however been quite the fashion extravaganza that has come to be expected of music festivals. With Agyness Deyn showing off a newly shaved head and an badly fitting sundress alongside Pixie Geldof in denim hot pants and a crop top.

A nautical Dita Von Teese sail around the second day of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival with her aristocratic French beau, Louis Marie de CastelbajacThe newly-single Paris Hilton is mellow in yellow as she takes in the second day of the Coachella Festival with sister Nicky Hilton and her fiance David KatzenbergKaty Perry mixes Native American fashion with a Keith Haring-inspired manicure on the second day of the Coachella Music and Arts Festival

Then we have the glamazons; Dita Von Teese perhaps not looking quite festival appropriate in her nautical outfit, Paris Hilton looks ready to go clubbing in a bright yellow kaftan dress and Katy Perry going for some sort of native American look.

In far more appropriate festival wear Mischa Barton and Kelly Osbourne in little shorts and oversized tops. None of them have quite managed to achieve the festival chic that is showcased over here in the UK……where is Kate Moss when you need her?

STYLE DEBATE – Zoe Saldana in Lanvin

Wednesday, 14 April, 2010

Avatar star Zoe Saldana chose a coral orange draped dress by Lanvin for her red carpet appearance last night in Los Angeles. The outing in the dress from Lanvin’s spring/summer 2010 range is the latest in a string of high profile appearances of designs from the collection.

Whilst Zoe’s dress is ok it does provoke some issues that address Lanvin’s collection as a whole. Firstly the colour, orange is never an easy colour to carry off and if a designer is going to try it probably ought to be kept simple, the draping is just too much. Audrey Tautou fell victim to what seems like a bad combination of over zealous use of colour and material movement in her dress for the BAFTAs.

It is not all doom and gloom however as Albert Elbaz’s creative direction for the spring summer Lanvin collection has bought about some beautiful gowns, see the dresses worn by Kim Cattrall (we adore the simple asymmetric cut and the nude colour) and Demi Moore as a great example.

STYLE DEBATE – Heidi Montag in Vegas

Sunday, 11 April, 2010

I know what your thinking, is Heidi Montag’s new body so ridiculously out of proportion that she can longer wear find any clothes that fit so instead has had to resort to artfully wrapping a sarong around herself? No that is not the case here, she is actually attending the opening of the Liquid Pool Lounge at the Aria Resort in Vegas.

Heidi arrived fresh from filming the final series of ‘The Hills’ which does promise to be the most drama filled yet! (Lady Glamourazzi has a great game to play whilst watching The Hills; it’s called count the number of Chanel bags being carried around by the lovely cast). Hubbie Spencer Pratt was also present lurking ominously behind the scenes in a very strange army looking outfit.
